I grew up in a Dutch immigrant family on the west coast of New Zealand. It’s a place that’s beautiful and rough, serene yet rowdy, laid-back but also—for me—there’s darkness: a cultural tension and machismo born from colonial injustices, inequality and gendered power. This tension shapes who I am and the duality in my work: fragile yet strong, playful and political, heavy yet light. This lightness I’ve craved especially in the darkness of a burnout suffered since 2024. I’m drawn to scrap material perhaps because of this—it’s often seen as useless or dead, but has mauri, life force within; it can be industrial yet organic, protective yet crushing, denotes freedom and entrapment. It is impolite and has soul. Duality lives in my process too. In the studio I’m led by conceptual visions but also let material speak, so there’s structure and chance. While I love collaboration, I also crave solo studio time. I approach my practice with a feminist lens through which I question systemic structures, interdependence, connect with social and environmental concerns. Collaboration, participation and play are central—I’m serious about my work, but also silly in it.

Collectives and Collaborations

TЯAsh Collective
Bibi founded TЯAsh Collective in 2022—a collective of artists, engineers, social workers, and researchers creating art from recycled materials.

(KYBL)
KIEM, Yufei Gao, Bibi Jordan and Lorena Rode first collaborated in May 2024 for the 'Radical Connection' exhibition in Amsterdam. When student protests against Dutch ties to Israeli institutions erupted, the artists transformed their individual works into a collaborative, site-specific piece of censorship, Radical Disconnection.

Snack’n Sketch
Bibi she hosts regular sketch sessions to observe and respond to our changing environment.
